Made in Britian

There are some wonderful foods produced in Britain, despite what the French would have you believe. When I was living in France the cheese makers I spoke to told me of the problems them had trying to get a new generation interested in making the artisan cheeses. Most are now industrially made by large companies. Here in the UK the reverse is happening and there is a growing artisan market, not just in cheese but in a variety of foods.
The growers are fighting back against the supermarkets who dictate how food will be produced. Just the other day I read that one of the supermarkets wouldn't buy local carrots because the shape wasn't perfect. They would rather have perfect flown from the other side of the world.
As a result we are seeing more and more local markets where the growers and independent producers are selling direct to us.
Made in Britain is one such market. You'll find them in Central St Giles in Holborn every Saturday and Sunday.
I bought a couple of those cheeses last week. Delicious!

.No bread for my breakfast, off to the bakery to get one of my favourite Portuguese tarts and imagine I am somewhere sunny and warm as I devour a tart or two over a coffee

Bermondsey Market

Bermondsey Street is changing. New apartments are being built and this new food market has arrived. Smaller and more intimate than Borough Market. Great food, music, friendly and perfect to just chill out on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Brixton Market Leads the Way

Shopping Queen Mary Portas was challenged by the Prime Minister to come up with a solution to resolve the decline and slow death of the High Street. Her solution? Treat them like small businesses and incentivise them accordingly.
Did you take a look at Brixton Market Mary? It has already happened here. A mixture of pop-up stores, small cafes, artisan boutiques, take a look if you haven't been there for awhile you will be pleasantly surprised.

Bricklane

Bricklane ( ব্রিক লেন) the Bangladeshi quarter of London.
Names of places in the UK really are literal. Bricklane was where bricks were manufactured (in the 15th century) and the buildings are made of brick.
From bricks it moved to brewing beer and weaving and tailoring cloth.

All this colourful past is alive and well in the current markets. Petticoat Lane and Spitalfields.

Two for a Fiver

Although a bit quieter than most Sundays, the Colombia Road Flower Market was still pretty lively. Go a little later and you'll get great bargains. Bunches of flowers for a fiver or a tenner.

Fish Harvest Festival

It's harvest festival time cross the country and today one of them was the annual festival of the fish harvest, celebrated at St-Mary-at-Hill church in the city.

The porters are wearing heavy metal hats. They are are flat on top and have a large rim to catch water. Why?? Well ... in days gone by when Billingsgate market was in the city the porters wearing these metal hats would place enormous baskets of fish in ice on their heads and race them up the hill to Leadenhall market. They had absolute right of way up the cobblestone path between the markets.

So heavy was the load that this 5ft 6in chap at the top was once 6ft 3in. He told me so himself.

September Theme Day - Markets

Covent garden is one of the most famous markets in the world. It is known a fruit and vege market has been here since 1630. However archaeological digs in recent years points to activity here around AD 410.

Neighbourhood

A corner near Portobello Rd. Closure of the famous market has been discussed in the media again recently.
Wandering around the nearby streets of expensive houses suggests a rather dull future for the area.

After the Market

Markets have always been part of the way of life in London. Every quarter has markets, some daily some specific days. Anything you are looking for can be found in one or other market.

These stalls empty in the evening will be bustling first thing in the morning.

I found a couple of websites to help you select a market for your next visit.
