April Theme Day - Cobblestones

Every month the CityDailyPhoto (CDP) community hosts a theme day. This month is cobblestones.
Due to that tiresome community out there in cyberworld the CDP portal was hacked during March. The technical team is working feverishly to bring it back to us.
In the meantime Julie of Sydney Eye has set up a linky for us to join for this month's theme day.

My contribution to cobblestones is the courtyard at Somerset House.

Romance Among 10,000 Ceramic Blooms

The fountain court at Somerset House is currently a grass meadow with 10,000 ceramic blooms. An art installation by Chilean artist Fernando Casasempere. The blooms are made with clay from his native Chile a material used by local artists for hundreds of years. The installation titled "Out of Sync" go on display in Santiago and then take up permanent residence in the desserts of northern Chile. In the mean time it is the perfect courting space for a couple of pigeons.

Sculptor/artist Ai Wei Wei has been detained by the Chinese authorities. His work of twelve zodiac heads is currently on display at Somerset House.

Ice Music and Norwegian Lullabies

Freezing hands occurred bringing this image to you.
Norwegian artist Terje Isungset first carves and sculpts musical instruments from his native lakes, rivers and ancient glaciers. He then plays these fragile instruments and is accompanied by the voice of Lena Nymark singing traditional lullabies.

The sound is hauntingly beautiful.

Playing in a temporary igloo on the terrace of Somerset House this weekend. Although the few concerts are sold out, you can buy one of their CD's.

I was able to get a quick shot of a couple of the instruments (left) before they were whisked into the freezer for protection until the next concert. The small instrument above, I suspect a broken piece, was the prize for this lad who missed out on tickets to the show.

Dancing Fountain

Summertime the courtyard of Somerset House is covered with dancing jets of water. Coloured lights add to the fun in the evening.
In July a dance performance choreographed with the fountains is promised.

May Theme Day - Statues

First of the month brings us the dailyphoto community's theme day, with this month being statues.
London has so many to choose from. I have chosen to show you one that is here temporarily.

This incredibly life like statue is one of the three statues created by sculpture Christian Jankowski of people performing statues. This one is Salvador Dali's Anthropomorphic Cabinet Woman.
So... is this art imitating life, imitating art or is it life imitating art, imitating life or..what do you think?

Stirred not Shaken

On the balcony of Somerset house overlooking the Thames is the Bombay Sapphire Dusk bar. Designed by the renown Tom Dixon.
Here you can sip your perfect martini, I'll have mine stirred not shaken thanks (despite what James Bond prefers).
Do you put vermouth in yours? I like a hint. Many don't like any. I've heard of waving the bottle near the glass without removing the cap.
Winston Churchill made his martini by adding gin then bowing towards France for the vermouth.

Cool place , but only open until 18 October. Get yourself over for a bit of cocktail imbibing.

I'm taller than you

Fun at Somerset House. 55 of these fountains dance and tease in the courtyard. The building itself is huge. The palace of the Duke of Somerset built in the 1500's. Since the 1800's, thanks to King Georg III the home of the Royal academy of arts.It was also from around this time the place the general register office. A place where certificates of births, deaths and marriages could be found. Until they moved out in 1970.
